Warnings
Luke 12
Icebreaker: Have you ever experienced firsthand: “pride goes before a fall”? Share a time you started thinking you were “all that” and your next step was to fall flat on your face (figuratively speaking).
1. There are times where Scripture counts heads (Acts 2:41), and times like this in Luke 12 where Jesus seems to warn not to let the size of the crowd go to your head. How do we keep the balance in ministry? Is it okay to count? What should we count? How do we avoid the pitfalls of pride and crowd pleasing?
2. Pride leads to hypocrisy. Why is that? How do we nurture a healthy humility?
3. Review Luke 12: 13-21. What does this say about saving up for retirement or storing up a “nest egg”? How much savings is too much? Trends in our culture indicate that we save more in hard times and in good times we save less. Scripture would indicate that we save in good times and spend our savings in hard times. (See Genesis 41:48-49; 56-57)
4. Read Philippians 4:6-7. What are the things in your life that cause the most worry and fretting? What is it about worry that is so dangerous for a disciple? (Hint see Luke 12:34)
5. Jesus encourages his disciples to be ready for service (vs. 35-48). What does “ideal” readiness look like? How does your readiness compare with the ideal you just described?
6. Crossroads uses Connect, Grow and Contribute to describe the path of a disciple. How are you doing in each of those three areas? What are your next steps?
