Sermon Based Small Group Questions
Icebreaker:
Option 1: As a kid what was the best thing you ever saved money for? How much did you make in your first job and what was it?
Option 2: What did your parents teach you about giving to God? Did your parents talk about finances and budget with you growing up?
1. What does Jesus mean when He says store up treasures in heaven? Matthew 19:21, Luke 12:33, I Timothy 6:17, Hebrews 10:34. Do these verses help you understand the concept?
2. Do you agree that” life arranges itself around our hearts”? Read v. 21 of Matthew 6 in various translations. Does this verse seem to go against common sense? Explain this from your own experience. (Example: In the message Pastor Kris talked about Randy Alcorn who said he never watched the stock market until he invested in it and then he was watching it all the time.)
3. Read Luke 16:13-15, James 4:4, I John 2:15-16 How do we leverage material things for God’s glory and not allow them to become an end in themselves? What are some practical ways we can leverage our (God given!) material wealth for God’s glory?
4. How do we balance living simply while at the same time not forcing ourselves into poverty? Read I Timothy 6:17-19 again. Comment on this quote by Corrie Ten Boom “I’ve learned to hold everything loosely because it hurts when God pries my fingers apart and takes them from me.”
5. When in your past have you taken the greatest strides in storing up “treasures in heaven”? What are your next steps in seeking first the Kingdom of God? How will it impact your giving? Why is it so hard to change in this area of our lives?
6. Pastor Kris shared the giving chart for Crossroads Church. What was your reaction? How can we grow in this area of our church?
