Being Human Part 5
Emotion (Emotional)
Psalm 42: Matthew 9:35-36: Genesis 2:23; 3:10
Part of being human means experiencing an enormous spectrum of emotion—we can feel happy, sad, fearful, angry, surprised, exhilarated, disgusted, jealous, and excited (sometimes all at the same time!). Emotions are part of how we experience and relate to the world, along with how we experience and relate to one another—and to God. God encourages (e.g., especially witnessed in the Psalms) us to come to him with our emotion, even when that emotion may need tempering (e.g., anger) or ignition (e.g., compassion). We acknowledge emotions are part of how God created us, but also—since the fall—that our emotions are sometimes distorted. Two of the first emotions witnessed in the Bible are joy (i.e., the man setting his eyes upon the woman for the first time, cf. Genesis), and then—tragically—fear (cf. Genesis 3) after the fall. Throughout the Gospels, we witness Jesus experiencing the gamut of human emotion, too. Jesus was filled with compassion (e.g., Matthew 9:38), anguish (e.g., Luke 22:44), sadness (e.g., John 11:35), indignation (e.g., Mark 10:14), and joy (e.g., Luke 10:21). Time-and-time again Jesus saw, felt, and acted. For example, Jesus saw people in need, he felt a gut-wrenching compassion, and then acted accordingly. What a wonderful model for us! We need not push emotion away, nor let emotions have free reign, but that we would ask God to stir and shape the emotion within—especially in response to what we see-asking that he would give us the wisdom in knowing how to respond. That pattern is evident through the Psalms, as the psalmist pours out (sometimes unfiltered!) how they feel to God. It’s often, in that very process of prayer, that God hones that emotion and sets the Psalmist on the right path. God does not want us to be unmoved, but that we would bring our emotion (or lack thereof) to him. God does not want us to be indifferent to the world around, but that we would see, feel, and act—all in accordance to his will.

Church Council Nominations: We will be receiving nominations for elders and deacons through May 17. Please clearly indicate whether your nomination is for an elder or a deacon. The character qualifications for both roles are found in 1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:5–9. Elders serve as servant leaders, focusing on shepherding and caring for the congregation, as well as encouraging, instructing, and leading according to God’s Word. Deacons serve as leading servants, helping lead key ministry areas such as benevolence, facilities, finances, and other administrative needs. Nominations can be sent to Pastor Drew at [email protected]
