Work (Purposed Work)

Colossians 3:12-4:1; Genesis 1:27-32: 2:15

When Paul says "whatever you do work with your whole heart as you are working for the Lord - he really means whatever you do! He doesn’t just have in mind only jobs that we might think are important or obviously connected to serving Jesus, but any work, no matter how repetitive, menial, or obscure the work may seem. Paul’s standard for working for the Lord applies to everyone—including slaves—so likewise it applies to anyone working today (whether your work and eort is paid or not). Work in the Bible is not just a means to an end or a pathway for retirement, but is part of God’s good plans for creation—that humans as image bearers of God—would take their part in nurturing and governing creation. In the garden of Eden, before sin entered the world, men and women were given the task of caring and co-ruling creation (cf. Genesis 1:27-30). Over the creation God made, he gives space for humans to create new things and employ their creativity (like naming the animals). Although, the world we live in and the workplaces we find ourselves in are broken and marred by sin, the purpose God gives to his people to govern, rule, nurture, and create remains the same. And the most significant opportunity we have to express this purpose is through our work. There, we get an opportunity to deploy the gifts God has given us for his purposes. At work, we will get the opportunity to model godly character (amongst many points of pressure), make good work that reflects the glory of God, minister grace and love to people who are undeserving (just like we are!), mold culture in ways that honor people and creation, be a mouthpiece for truth and justice, and (when the opportunity arises), be a messenger of the gospel. How freeing that we don’t depend on our work to define our purpose and reward, for it has already been given to us in Christ.

From July 13–16, kids will dive into four days packed with high-energy games, awesome worship, hands-on activities, and unforgettable Bible adventures. This year, kids will learn how Jesus comes to seek and save the lost as we journey through stories like Moses, Ruth & Naomi, Zacchaeus, and Paul, AND see how His rescue story includes us too. Each day will be filled with engaging Bible teaching, worship, games, and hands-on activities designed just for them. It’s a week your kids won’t want to miss!
