Rest
Matthew 12:1-14; Genesis 2:1-3
While few people would deny the importance of rest—or at least concede the benefits
of rest—it seems that genuine rest evades many. There are cultural (e.g., the value of utility),
behavioral (e.g., unhealthy patterns of work), psychological (e.g., being unable to “switch-off” or
predominantly deriving self-worth from productivity), and physical (e.g., persistent and pervading pain) impediments to rest. Part of our brokenness is living in—and contributing to—a world that persistently resists Sabbath. Of course, Sabbath encompasses more than physical rest from bodily fatigue. God did not rest because he was exhausted, but as a model to those whom he created. Note that when “God had finished the work he had been doing” (i.e., the small business of bringing all of creation into being!), he not only rested, but he set the day apart—he made it holy—as an enduring rhythm for his people. The seventh day is the first thing that God blesses! Later enshrined in law, God saw it fit that our lives would be punctuated by a day every week in which we set aside our tools, are liberated from the pressure to produce, acknowledge it is the Lord who sustains, recognize (and enjoy!) God’s presence, celebrate God’s creation, praise our Creator with God’s people, be a distinctive witness in a restless world, and anticipate that which is yet to come. Ironically, while the Sabbath was partly intended to free us from a Pharaoh-like enslavement to utility, Jesus challenged those who had become enslaved to a legalistic interpretation of this most holy day. Humanity was not created for the Sabbath, but for our good and in good dependence on God. Rest is an invitation to cease from our work, find rejuvenation in God, celebrate God’s goodness, and embrace God’s presence and love.

From July 13–16, kids will dive into four days packed with high-energy games, awesome worship, hands-on activities, and unforgettable Bible adventures. This year, kids will learn how Jesus comes to seek and save the lost as we journey through stories like Moses, Ruth & Naomi, Zacchaeus, and Paul, AND see how His rescue story includes us too. Each day will be filled with engaging Bible teaching, worship, games, and hands-on activities designed just for them. It’s a week your kids won’t want to miss!
